Shanghai, December 2002

"Very well organized, excellent speakers"
Anna Zhang, Senior Operations Finance Supervisor, Weatherford Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.

The role of the finance professional in China is undergoing dramatic change. Companies preparing for intensified foreign competition following China's entry to the WTO have a mandate to restructure.

Foreign direct investment provides an increasingly efficient transfer of technology, business-systems and intellectual capital to Chinese firms, and new resources for capital are opening up as financial institutions receive expanded powers. Such developments have major implications for finance professionals in China: an ever-increasing level of responsibility for their company's finance and business performance.

In response to these changes, CFO China launched CFO Rising, a new one-day conference, covering the key areas of concern to all Chinese CFOs.

CFO China would like to thank all the participants of the CFO Rising Conference. The Conference offered a wealth of insights into the issues that most concern today's finance heads operating in China, and provided an ideal forum for delegates to compare and share experiences.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to our sponsors Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Systems Union for their support.

A packed audience at CFO China's inaugural event.   Ziang Zhuo Qing, Deputy Director, Shanghai Municipal Finance Bureau, gives a warm welcome to delegates at the conference.

Feng Shuping, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Finance, PRC, looks at the new role for CFOs in China amidst a growing trend for better finance management and disclosure.   Companies in China can no longer count on local banks to come up with the cash to fuel expansion. Luo Weide, Chief Financial Officer, China Eastern Airlines, demonstrates how going global changed the corporate finance function of his company.

Changgen Wu, Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking, Morgan Stanley, shares his views on the best channels for raising capital.   Matthew Bersani, Partner, Shearman & Sterling analyses the major issues encountered with multi-national jurisdictional listings.
Leiming Chen, Senior Associate, Shearman & Sterling analyses the major issues encountered with multi-national jurisdictional listings.

Delegates took the opportunity to question and exchange views with speakers.

The level of discussion extended well into the coffee break.
Ashley Clarke, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific, Systems Union, looks at the current issues in finance and how financial intelligence, the new paradigm for management, will fulfil the changing need for information. He also discusses trends for financial intelligence solution in the coming 2 years.

Ted Lee and Ronald Chao, Partners, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, take the opportunity to discuss how to improve a company's fitness in China 21st Century WTO.

Sun Zheng, Vice Principal, Shanghai University of Finance; Xia Da Wei, Principal, Shanghai National Accounting Institute, both look at the framework and mechanism of training and development of CFOs in China.

Zhang Wei Guo, Chief Accountant, China Securities Regulatory Commission, gets down to basics with corporate governance in China. He looks at the fundamental believes behind local regulators' approach to the management of corporate finance and how CFOs fit into the government's schemes.

Baosteel is one of the most successful iron and steel companies in China to transform into a global player. Jia Yanlin, CFO, equates the company's success with its ability to create value and talks about how the use of objective measures helps the company.

Frank Lai, CFO, Central Semiconductor Manufacturing, and Jiang Qiu Xia, CFO, Shanghai Hua Yi (Group) Co., examines how heads of finance in private companies formulate the yardstick for measuring their company's fulfilment of its obligations to stakeholders, staff and customers.

Professor Larry Lang, Chair, Professor of Finance, Chinese University of Hong Kong, talks about how analysts view the ROE of local companies. He also analyzes the latest government guidelines on rights offering.
